The Perfect Valentines Date

As some of you may already know, my name is Sarah and I am a hopeless romantic. At the same time, I personally don't think that love and romance requires tons of money spent on me or materialistic gifts. I prefer thought, affection and a mushy well-written card.

I am so over the same old thing each year when it comes to Valentines Day. Giving each other big fluffy teddies and silly gifts emblazoned with hearts that go into the back of closets, and spending ridiculous amounts of money on fancy dinners at that fully-booked restaurant is just not my idea of a good time. Not being able to have a nice conversation and worrying about what to order or if you chose the right outfit can easily make you forget what Valentines Day is actually about.

I am about to share with you how to plan the perfect most non-cliche Valentines Day date everrrr. Ladies you don't always have to expect the guys to plan everything, turn the tables this year. Whether you are planning this for your boyfriend/girlfriend/crush/blind date/friend, I promise you this is the way to do it right. You can thank me later!

The place:

Stay at home, simple as that. What better place to have a date than in the comfort of your own home? Whether you share a place with your partner, or it is someone who is coming to your house for the first time, this is a way of putting you both at ease. When you are in a home environment instead of a restaurant full of people, it also allows more focus to be placed on the two of you. If for whatever reason you can't have the date at home, find a place that is private and quiet (wherever that may be).

The setting:

The idea is to have a candle-lit dinner at a small table set up inside the house or outside on a veranda/balcony. After snacks and the main meal is finished, relax and enjoy dessert on a rolled out blanket on the floor stacked with pillows. Put on some background music to set the mood, and light more candles. Later on you can choose a movie that you know you will both enjoy, and cuddle on the blanket and pillow situation that you set up. If that doesn't sound appealing I don't know what will. At the same time, keep it simple and relaxed.

The food:

We all know that the way to a man's heart is food, and if it is a girl you are planning for they will simply appreciate the fact that you have made the effort to prepare a meal. For starters keep it simple with a cheese board (gouda, blue cheese, brie, camembert), a french baguette cut in slices, a bowl of fig jam or onion marmalade for toppings and some olives, grapes and nuts as extras.

For the mains, cook simple comfort food (notice how I keep saying simple) such as a meaty pasta dish, a hearty beef burger, parmesan chicken, mac and cheese- you get the drift. Extra cheese and extra butter always works-who cares about calories on Valentines Day?

Then comes the best part, dessert. I personally like everything and anything that is smothered in chocolate, so chocolate covered strawberries is always a win. You can also feed each other if you want to get super romantic. Other ideas for dessert is brownies, microwave smores, rice crispy treats or red velvet cupcakes. You don't have to spend hours perfecting some fancy soufflĂ©, it just has to taste good.

The gift:

ALWAYS give a card with something sentimental and meaningful written inside, it is the easiest way to show someone you care and that you have really taken the time to write down your feelings (this is obviously harder for guys, but even more endearing). Thoughtful bought gifts such as an engraved and inexpensive piece of jewellery, or a basket full of their favourite things really adds to that genuine  effort to please the other.

If you tried this idea for yourself I would love to hear some feedback, and I hope that in the days leading up you have a fantastic Valentines Day. You deserve it x
