An evening at Madame Zingara

My mom went to Madame Zingara with a group of her friends a while back, and I can remember how insanely envious I was watching her dress up, feather boa and all, to watch a performance that can only be described as a South African Cirque du soleil.

So naturally, when I was offered a ticket to attend this years production of Madame Zingara at Suncoast Casino in Durban, I had to stop myself from screaming it from the rooftops and doing a cartwheel in true Zingara style. FINALLY I would get to experience this weird and wonderful show!

Dress: Urban Shoes: Zoom Belt: Country Road Necklace: Woolworths

Like every girl, I LOVE TO DRESS UP. It could be the best part of actually going out. What I didn't expect though, was to walk through the mall for hours and not find one dress that I could even bother to take home. Fast forward to the day of, where I was searching through boxes trying to find a dress suitable for Zingara (we recently moved) but I finally settled on a white Urban dress that I paired with a beautiful white mask. Keep it simple as I always say...

When you walk into the giant Madame Zingara tent you don't really know where to look first. The decor is a mixture of burlesque, gothic halloween chic and a 1920's speak easy. Giant lollipops coming out of the ground, a man in a court jesters outfit handing you a cocktail, a cage adorned with flowers, a pink-spotted cow. This was only the beginning!

We were shown to our table by a waitress I can only describe as a warrior princess, with wild hair and a spotted brown and black leotard. The food throughout the evening was spectacular (it was way too dark to take photos) and we had starters of soups and cheeses, followed by fillet medallions with chilli chocolate sauce, and a mini dessert selection of ice cream, cheesecake and malva pudding.

The entertainment did not stop from beginning to end. To start off there were the classic circus clowns that fell over one another, squirted the audience with water guns and made a few jokes. Then there was the strong couple, who lifted and held themselves at angles I never even knew a body could contort to. I sat there in complete awe thinking about how I went to gym three times last week and once was just to get a smoothie from the restaurant there.

There were the acrobat brothers who tossed each other in the air with a graceful ease, the singing group that would make Aretha Franklin herself feel proud, and aerial artists that mesmerised me as they turned ribbons and hoola-hoops into works of art with every movement. My favourite performance had to be the lady in the bath tub, flicking her wet hair around like a scene in Flashdance. The way she moved in and out of the bath tub was so beautiful to watch, and it felt as if we were watching a personal performance of a woman by herself. I loved how unusual it was.

The pole dancer put on a performance that was so sensual and powerful that it kind of made me want to start some lessons of my own. These acts just remind me what the human body is capable of! Google the 'flag-pole move', you pretty much have to use every muscle in your body to do it.

Madame Zingara was an evening I truly appreciated as a lover of performing arts and all things strange. There aren't many things better than being constantly fed and entertained for 4 hours. Don't forget to stay after the show to dance on the stage or meet the performers in the flesh. It is such great value for money and because every show is different I will go again and again each year. x
