Cabbages and Condoms

When I first heard the name of the restaurant 'Cabbages and Condoms' I thought there had to be some mistake... condom what? You can eat at this place? I know I am not the first person to think how interesting (and inedible) it may sound, but its an even better excuse to check it out yourself!

To give a little background to the restaurant before I talk about the experience, the whole concept is to promote health education and prevent transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. This is a serious problem in Thailand and the world over, and I think its a fun way to bring light to these important issues. The signs leading up to the entrance of Cabbages and Condoms are downright hilarious. Happy waving condoms show you the way down the street, and may I just say this was entertainment in itself...

The enthusiastic condom shows the way

As soon as I arrived at the entrance I was pleasantly surprised at how upmarket it is. As you walk in to your left there is a shop selling creative arts and crafts (all made with condoms of course) as well as other interesting nicknacks to buy. As you walk further along, this is where all the entertainment continues: A condom bride and groom, a condom Santa, condom light fixtures!

The restaurant is two storeys, with both and inside and outside area. There are various choices as to where you would like to be seated, and the atmosphere is quite charming. There are fairy lights hanging from tree branches, low hanging lanterns and jazzy music playing in the background. Okay so enough about condoms, lets talk about food and drinks! The dishes are authentically Thai and the portion sizes are generous. We did as the locals do at meal times, and ordered a whole lot of food to share among the table. The menu is extensive, and the most difficult part of the experience was deciding what to order!

My favourite dishes would have to be the vegetable spring rolls (150B) that were especially crispy, the fried rice with prawn (200B) the green curry (270B) and the meaty/vegetable pad thai dishes of every variety (200B). For those with a sweet tooth you will be very happy to know that the dessert menu is very pleasing indeed! Im talking fried banana fritters with honey (200B), the traditional favourite mango sticky rice (200B) and delicious deep fried ice cream (200B)

Whilst the guys enjoyed drinks from the beer selection, us girls chose the from the cocktails which were delicious and especially sweet. Other than the usual mojitos and pina coladas, be sure to order the 'Bangkok Night' for an extra kick.

You will be relieved to note that the food at Cabbages and Condoms is 'guaranteed not to cause pregnancy'. You also get free condoms instead of the usual mints when you receive your bill, which is a good enough reason as any to give this quirky restaurant a try!

Ill be back!
